We provide a wealth of information on our website about timber windows, but we'd be happy to visit your home or arrange a call-back.

We have a no pressure approach to meeting our customers and we always send written quotations following a visit. We understand that these projects sometimes take a while to get off the ground and we know that our customers don't want to be hassled so we simply send the quotation and wait. Some customers come back within a week, others take a month or even a year and that's fine.

Below you'll find a selection of work we have undertaken in the Tyne & Wear area, supplying and fitting timber windows.

Replacement Wooden Casement Windows in Tyneside

These replacement Flush casement windows are fitted into the original stone mullions and are a very close match to the old single glazed windows.

The new windows are double-glazed with the original stained glass restored and encapsulated inside.

Ancient Stone Cottage in Jarrow, South Tyneside

This Grade II Listed property was undergoing extensive refurbishment and needed new timber windows to fit between the stone mullions. The trouble was the sandstone mullions were too old and weak to take any new windows, so new mullions had to be installed by the builder.

Once these were in, we could fit our new windows - engineered softwood casement windows with Heritage slim double-glazing putty-glazed into solid through-bars. The finish was dual-colour with white to the inside to reflect light, and a pale blue outside.

Stained Glass Recovered, Restored And Replaced - Wylam, Tyne Valley

The village of Wylam, home to George and Robert Stephenson of 'Rocket' fame, contains a large number of 1930's-built detached and semi-detached houses. Typical of this period, many of the windows in these properties have decorative top-lights in stained glass and lead. This has often proved a barrier to replacing the windows as customers have been reluctant to lose their beautiful old glass in favour of the modern methods of decorating double-glazing. However, Blackthorn Timber Windows will not only retain this feature but can restore and repair old glass and lead and also make additional stained glass panels in exactly the same style using authentic stained glass, some of it decades old. These are then encapsulated within a new double-glazed unit which protects the old glass and gives the added benefit of excellent insulation.

The full window...

In this case most of the original top-lights plus a 4-light window at the top of the stairs were intact. However, two of the top-lights did not match the others and our customer wanted to correct this. Also important to our customer was the use of the same type of dimpled glass seen on the original windows.

We replaced the windows with a 92mm stormproof casement window complete with black monkey-tail handles on all opening lights. The stained glass was recovered, cleaned, repaired and re-soldered as necessary and then the lead was blackened before the panels were fitted within new sealed units. The large photo shows an original panel within a new sealed unit whilst the smaller photo is of the new stained glass units, made just as before with real H-section lead and lots of skill!

Stormproof Casement Bay Window In Jesmond, Newcastle

Our task with this installation was to replace the upstairs bay window with one that closely matched the ground floor bay, installed a few years by others. Careful, precise measurement of the bay windows and the angles between them is the key to a successful bay window like this.

We specified 12mm antiqued lead diamonds for the windows which comprised 4 opening sashes and 6 fixed sashes. This photo illustrates the benefits of having fixed- or dummy sashes where the window doesn't open - direct-glazed frames would have looked completely unbalanced and at odds with the opening lights alongside.

Double Glazed Windows In Converted Chapel

A converted chapel near Newcastle-upon-Tyne needed new double-glazed timber windows each one shaped to the original stone arch. Ventilation was provided by a top-hung opening sash in the lower third of each window. We made these from engineered Redwood, finished in a rich translucent stain coating.

Timber casement windows such as these still demand quite a lot of skilled joinery work to create the individual arches from a template taken on site. The arch is made from a series of straight pieced individually machined and hand-jointed which are then shaped by hand and eye by a skilled and experienced craftsman in the joinery shop.

Timber Sash Windows installed in Jesmond, Newcastle upon Tyne

We recently completed the installation of timber sash windows to this delightful property in Jesmond, Newcastle. The house which is approximately 100 years old sits within a row of generously proportioned town houses complete with high ceilings and large windows.

Our client wanted to retain the period features of the property whilst gaining from double-glazing and weather-proofing. Our timber sash windows were a perfect match for the property and the result is excellent.

Inside, polished chrome hook lifts and fitch fasteners give a modern twist to the traditional sash look whilst the improvement in insulation and noise reduction is very apparent.
